An eco-friendly fabric called linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant, one of the oldest crops in the world. In addition to its strength and durability, flax has been cultivated for thousands of years worldwide and is prized for its sustainable, zero-waste production process. To harvest the fibres, flax plants are either cut at the base or hand-pulled. Retting, a natural process that separates the fibres from the woody stem, is applied to the remaining stalks after the seeds have been removed by winnowing or tearing. To create the beautiful, breathable linen fabric we know today, the longest fibres some up to 20 cm long are painstakingly collected, spun into yarn, and woven.
